Droplets

Deploy Droplets (cloud VMs) in seconds. Run any workload, from mission critical CPU, memory, and storage intensive apps to low traffic sites.

Effective January 1, 2026, we're moving to per-second billing (with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher). This offers truly granular cost control, drastically reducing spending on short-lived workloads like running batch jobs and automated testing.

Choose the right Droplet type

Basic Droplets

Basic Droplets have the most efficient CPU usage at a lower cost for workloads that underuse dedicated threads. They're ideal for bursty applications that can handle variable levels of CPU.

CPU-Optimized Droplets

CPU-Optimized Droplets provide a 2:1 ratio of memory to CPU. This configuration with fast (2.6GHz+), dedicated vCPUs is optimal for applications that demand fast, consistent performance such as media streaming, gaming and data analytics. The Premium variant of CPU-Optimized Droplets also provides up to 10Gbps outbound network speeds and NVMe SSDs.

CPU Options
Memory vCPU Transfer SSD Variant SSD $/hr $/mo
4 GiB 2 vCPUs 4,000 GiB 25 GiB $0.06250
8 GiB 4 vCPUs 5,000 GiB 50 GiB $0.12500
16 GiB 8 vCPUs 6,000 GiB 100 GiB $0.25000
32 GiB 16 vCPUs 7,000 GiB 200 GiB $0.50000

General Purpose Droplets

General Purpose Droplets have a balanced ratio of memory to dedicated CPU, suitable for a wide variety of production workloads. They're best for general purpose workloads that require dedicated computer power. The Premium variant of General Purpose Droplets also provides up to 10Gbps outbound network speeds and NVMe SSDs.

CPU Options
Memory vCPU Transfer SSD Variant SSD $/hr $/mo
8 GiB 2 vCPUs 4,000 GiB 25 GiB $0.09375
16 GiB 4 vCPUs 5,000 GiB 50 GiB $0.18750
32 GiB 8 vCPUs 6,000 GiB 100 GiB $0.37500
64 GiB 16 vCPUs 7,000 GiB 200 GiB $0.75000
128 GiB 32 vCPUs 8,000 GiB 400 GiB $1.50000
160 GiB 40 vCPUs 9,000 GiB 500 GiB $1.87500

Memory-Optimized Droplets

Memory-optimized Droplets provide 8 GiB RAM for each vCPU. The additional memory can help you avoid excessively swapping to disk or getting out-of-memory errors, both of which significantly impact your application's performance and stability. Memory-Optimized Droplets use NVMe SSDs which deliver better disk performance for workloads that involve a large number of transactions.

CPU Options
Memory vCPU Transfer SSD Variant SSD $/hr $/mo
16 GiB 2 vCPUs 4,000 GiB 50 GiB $0.12500
32 GiB 4 vCPUs 6,000 GiB 100 GiB $0.25000
64 GiB 8 vCPUs 7,000 GiB 200 GiB $0.50000
128 GiB 16 vCPUs 8,000 GiB 400 GiB $1.00000
192 GiB 24 vCPUs 9,000 GiB 600 GiB $1.50000
256 GiB 32 vCPUs 10,000 GiB 800 GiB $2.00000

Storage-Optimized Droplets

Storage-Optimized Droplets use NVMe (non-volatile memory express), which is an interface protocol explicitly built for modern SSDs. It takes advantage of parallelism to deliver disk performance that can be order of magnitude faster than our regular SSDs.

CPU Options
Memory vCPU Transfer SSD Variant SSD $/hr $/mo
16 GiB 2 vCPUs 4,000 GiB 300 GiB $0.19494
32 GiB 4 vCPUs 6,000 GiB 600 GiB $0.38988
64 GiB 8 vCPUs 7,000 GiB 1,170 GiB $0.77976
128 GiB 16 vCPUs 8,000 GiB 2,340 GiB $1.55952
192 GiB 24 vCPUs 9,000 GiB 3,520 GiB $2.33929
256 GiB 32 vCPUs 10,000 GiB 4,690 GiB $3.11905

Droplets specific questions

A DigitalOcean Droplet is a Linux-based virtual machine (VM) that runs on top of virtualized hardware. Each Droplet is a new server you can use, either as a standalone server or as part of a larger cloud infrastructure. They are designed to be simple, scalable, and developer-friendly.

A Droplet is DigitalOcean's brand name for a virtual private server (VPS). Essentially, they are the same thing — a virtualized server that mimics a dedicated physical server with its own resources and dedicated operating system.

DigitalOcean Droplets are a form of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). You are provided with the virtualized hardware (computing, storage, networking) and are responsible for managing the OS, applications, and data.

You can choose from popular Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, and CoreOS, or use pre-configured 1-Click Apps for LAMP, Docker, WordPress, and more.

Yes, each Droplet comes with its own public IPv4 address. You can also assign Floating IPs to your Droplets for high availability.

All Droplets use high-performance Solid State Drives (SSDs) for fast disk I/O. For additional storage, you can use DigitalOcean Volumes Block Storage.

Each Droplet includes a generous amount of free outbound data transfer, starting from 500 GiB/month depending on plan. Inbound bandwidth is always free.

Droplets are available at a variety of price points starting from as low as $4 per month, based on RAM, CPU, SSD storage, and bandwidth included in your plan.

Droplets are billed on a per-second basis, with a 60-second minimum and a monthly cap, so you never pay more than the monthly price for a Droplet.

DigitalOcean often provides promotional credits for new users to try Droplets and other services for free. Check the website for current offers.

Droplets are versatile — hosting websites and web apps, dev/test environments, databases, CI/CD pipelines, VPN and proxy servers, game servers, and ML/AI applications with GPU-optimized Droplets.

Yes — Droplets provide the performance, scalability, and security needed to run online stores of all sizes.

DigitalOcean is often praised for simplicity and a developer-friendly interface, great for individuals and SMBs. AWS EC2 offers a wider range of instance types for large enterprises. DigitalOcean is generally more affordable for comparable resources.

Google Compute Engine is a more enterprise-focused platform with a vast array of services. DigitalOcean Droplets are known for straightforward pricing and ease of use, popular with developers and startups.

Create a new Droplet from the DigitalOcean control panel in a few clicks — choose your OS, plan, and datacenter region, and your server is up in under a minute.

You can connect using SSH (Secure Shell) with an SSH client and either the root password or an SSH key.

The core Droplet offering is unmanaged. DigitalOcean also offers a Managed Kubernetes service, and you can find managed hosting partners specializing in DigitalOcean infrastructure.

Datacenters are located worldwide, including New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Singapore, London, Frankfurt, Toronto, Bangalore, and Richmond.

Yes — you can create a Droplet in the London (UK) datacenter, ideal for serving customers in the UK and Europe.

Yes — DigitalOcean has a datacenter in Bangalore, India, ideal for the Indian market and surrounding regions.
